Fewer Clients Making Appointments as Recession

Nabil Molai OMAHA (KPTM)- Getting a perm or just simply taking off a few inches, some people are now waiting a little longer to see their hair stylists. Another sign of some tough times, but as some salons are struggling; a new salon opens up in west Omaha.

Looking clean cut or getting it styled, it's something many used to get scheduled ahead of time on a weekly or monthly basis. Molly Kisielewski, a hair stylist says, "It was crazy, to call in last minute you wouldn't get in last minute, it just wouldn't happen with me, sometimes a couple of weeks depending on what you needed." But Molly says the recession is even affecting her hair salon, customers are getting fewer haircuts. "More gapy, not as many people coming in as frequently, usually if they get their haircut four weeks, they push it to six." Losing hundreds of dollars a month," Molly says. "Usually you have money extra, now it's living week to week."

But as the economy is affecting their pocket books, Shelli Harlow, owner of Pure Hair Studio wasn't really concerned. She opened her doors a week ago. Harlow says, "You just have a feeling you have to go with it, I don't think it's ever the perfect time, but I think if you have the feeling that it's going to be right for you and right for your clients, you can make it work." Harlow says this has been her plan for a year now even if two or three competitors surround the location on 156th and Maple. "Everybody has hair, everybody needs a haircut, scared to lose some, through the years you do, you lose some and you gain some."

Both salons tell us, they are seeing more people coming in the last couple of weeks. They say part of it could be people are getting their tax returns another could be as the weather warms up more people are wanting to get haircuts.

"She has a slight case of pneumonia," Munroe told The Associated Press. "We've had a sudden change of weather here due to a cold snap."
