A MAN in his 40s has been shot at a hair salon in Leeds. The attack, which bore the hallmarks of a professional hit, happened in Chapeltown Road, Chapeltown, around 6.45pm, 05 May 2003. Police cordoned off the Best Fade hair salon after the gunman was seen running away along Button Hill, the road which runs alongside the shop. Locals named the victim, who was shot in both legs, as the owner of the saloon, Renny. Det Insp Paul Fountain said three shots were fired and a man was shot in both legs. There were two people in the shop at the time. The second person, understood to be a customer, was shocked but unharmed. The injured man was taken to hospital where his condition today is described as stable. Coun Norma Hutchinson (Lab, Chapel Allerton) said today: "It is a sad event for the area and for the community, especially when people are trying to rebuild the area after so much violence in the past few years." The shooting took place on a parade of shops which local people said was a popular haunt for drug dealers and is only yards from the noitorious and now demolished Hayfield pub. The gunman is described as a stocky African-Caribbean who was wearing a black top and balaclava. He is between 5ft 8ins and 5ft 10ins. Police appealed to anyone in the area between 6.30 and 7pm yesterday who saw the gunman or who had any other information to ring them on 0113 241 3285 or 241 3259. The shooting came 14 hours after an incident outside a Leeds city nightclub. Gunshots were heard as more than 4,000 clubbers were streaming out of the Majestyk nightclub in City Square at 4am. No-one was injured. A number of firearm shells were recovered from the scene.
