Auckland hairdresser Lucy Marr has won the top award at the largest hairdressing event in the Southern Hemisphere, the Hair Expo in Sydney.
Marr scooped the New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year Award based on what the judges describe as an adventurous and edgy photographic portfolio backed up by strong business and marketing plans.
Marr is co-owner of Stephen Marr Hair Skin and Body salons with her husband Stephen. A second salon has just opened in Newmarket.
While the structure of the Expo does not allow for direct competition between the New Zealand and Australian finalists, the same international judging panel sits across both categories.
Organisers say New Zealand’s strong reputation for innovation and global thinking across the Tasman is a huge part of the Hair Expo event.
Director Anthony Mascolo insists New Zealand is without question a first rung hairdressing nation and it’s hairdressers as exciting and cutting edge as its fashion designers.
He describes Marr’s winning style as capturing the spirit of youth New Zealand. She is no shrinking kiwi!
Marr who has been hairdressing for fifteen years is a well known commentator on hair styling and direction in the New Zealand beauty media.
This Award is one of the most sought after in hairdressing and I’m really thrilled to win. Even more significantly, it’s a celebration of the differences in Australian and New Zealand hairdressing styles and that’s great for the whole industry.
The hairdressing awards at the Hair Expo are the climax of three days of seminars, shows and product and technological developments.
Now in its eighteenth year, the Hair Expo proclaims its Awards as the Everest of hairdressing excellence. Hair Expo throbs with passion, creativity, spirit and vitality. More than 22,000 members of the global hairdressing tribe descend upon Sydney’s Darling Harbour each year in an explosive weekend of fashion, education, inspiration, motivation and community. Hair Expo has grown to become one of the world’s most significant hairdressing events.
Hair Expo pushes the envelope in terms of education and innovation at the same time celebrating the latest innovations in professional hairdressing products and lifestyle essentials.
Over the 3 day Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June each year, Hair Expo incorporates a 7,500m2 exhibition, featuring more than 120 companies with 5 main fashion stages; an evening gala runway program, culminating in the industry’s most prestigious hairdressing awards; an education and seminar programme; cocktail parties; hospitality; special events and product launches.
