IT’S the war of the locks between two players for the S$10-a-haircut business here.
One is the Japanese pioneer, which brought the idea of the 10-minute haircut to Singapore, while the other is an overhauled version of its former franchisee.
The two Tokyo-based QB House and its new competitor EC-House are slugging it out with similar expansion plans here and overseas.
Both chains, for instance, are planning to open 10 more outlets here by the end of this year.
They have similarly opened outlets in Hong Kong and are targeting regional countries such as Malaysia.
EC-House, set up in January, said that it even planned to take the fight to Japan, where its rival ranks as the No 1 express hair salon, with 287 outlets serving 700,000 customers every month.
It set up its Tokyo office last month and hoped to open its first outlet there within two years, said its managing firm, Earnson Management Singapore.
Here, it leads the market with 21 outlets compared to its rival’s four and it is stoutly guarding its lead.
Earnson’s general manager Kenneth Png said: The competition motivates us to move even faster. The Straits Times/ANN
