A Jewish hairdresser from North London proved she was a cut above the rest last week when she was named Afro Hairdresser of the Year at the 21st British Hairdressing Awards 2005.
Coiffure queen Claire Rothstein from Pimlico beat six other finalists to the title, after just eight years in the world of snipping and styling.
I was completely surprised with the result, the 25-year-old told the Jewish News. It was overwhelming and I’m really flattered.
I was up against many long-standing hairdressers in the industry and still can’t believe that I was the winner. I’m ecstatic with the result.
She added: I remember everyone wishing me Mazeltov when I won. It was really funny.
Although she’s a relative newcomer to the world of snipping and styling, Rothstein says she’d set her sights on the salon life from an early age, having always been a lover of fashion, art and all things creative.
And as a hairdresser who is determined to broaden her horizons in her industry, she has certainly made her mark as one of the only Jewish afro hairdressers in the country.
But her talents don’t end with shaping frizzy follicles. As well as tending to tresses at trendy new London salon Bloww, Claire also styles hair for photo shoots for publications such as the Sunday Times magazine.
Looking to the future, she says: I hope to keep progressing in that field.
But she admits that not all her clients have had the luscious locks sported by supermodels. In fact, reflecting on her Jewish clientele, the coiffeur confesses that while some have silky or sleek hair, others haven’t shared the same crowning glory. Instead they’ve had the dreaded Jew-fro.
As for her advice to all those out there who are at their wit-ends, or even their split-ends with their hair, Claire suggests shelling out on a powerful hairdryer and styling products such as smoothing cream and serums.
It’s amazing just how different you’re hair can look when you invest in the right products she said.
