KANGAR, MALAYSIA: A hairdresser who made 14 calls to the Penang Fire and Rescue Services Depart-ment “just for fun,” found out the hard way that crank calls do not come cheap.
Yesterday, a Sessions court ordered Hazrini Hamzah, 23, from Jalan Senangin, to pay a total of RM4,000 in fines after she pleaded guilty to two charges of making crank calls to the emergency number 994 connected to the department at Jalan Perak, Penang.
Hazrini admitted making seven calls to the number on June 14, 2007, and another seven on July 26 without revealing her identity.
She was charged under Section 233(1)(b) of the Communications and Multimedia Act which carries a maximum of a RM50,000 fine or a year’s jail or both upon conviction.
When asked by Sessions judge Wan Norzanuar Wan Ahmad why she made the calls, Hazrini said she had done it “for fun.”
Hazrini was fined RM2,000, in default two months’ jail, on each of the charges. She paid the fines.
